Colored pencil blending practice sheets for layering and shading
Learn pressure, layering and burnishing one calm step at a time, with any set you already own.
Overview
Colored pencil skills grow fastest when you focus on a single technique per session, and this set is built exactly that way. Across 26 undated pages you learn to control pressure, layer smoothly, burnish and shade so forms look real, using stroke drills, 24 gradient and two-color blend strips, an 8 x 8 mixing grid, a swatch chart for 72 pencils, value and form exercises, texture studies and six guided studies.
You get US Letter and A4 PDF files as an instant download, and nothing is shipped. Any brand of pencils works.
How these colored pencil drills make blending easier
Most beginners press too hard, too soon. Page 4 pairs a pressure ladder of five steps with layering rows, revealing how much pigment a single pencil can really carry, so you learn to build color slowly. Stroke drills for circulism, hatching and back-and-forth fills train your hand, while gradient bars and blend strips teach the soft transitions that make a drawing look finished.
When you reach shading forms, you sketch a sphere, cube and cylinder yourself rather than filling a printed outline. Each guided study takes one subject, such as a cherry pair or a lemon slice, and splits it into four illustrated steps. Since nothing is dated, you can print the drills again whenever you want more practice.

Questions
Questions about the colored pencil
Do I need a particular pencil brand?
No. The pages carry no brand names, so you simply write in your own color names or numbers and use whatever set you have.
What paper should I print on?
We suggest smooth paper of 120 to 160 gsm, roughly 80 to 110 lb text, or smooth bristol when your printer can handle it. Ordinary copy paper suits warm ups and stroke drills but saturates after a few layers, so print a single test page first.
Is solvent blending required?
No, it is optional. Page 5 compares dry finishes with a solvent and includes a safety and ventilation checklist if you decide to try it.
Can I print the drills more than once?
Yes. The set is undated, so you can reprint any drill, chart or study as often as you like for personal use.
